Question 1

Why did Cipher Digital (CIFR) revenue fall 43% and the stock drop?

Accepted Answer

Cipher deliberately powered down legacy bitcoin mining equipment to free physical capacity for hyperscale AI tenants, so mining revenue stopped before the new lease revenue began. Q2 2026 revenue was $24.8 million against a $31.9 million consensus, and the GAAP net loss of $268 million included a $150.5 million non-cash warrant remeasurement charge that inflated the headline figure. In the same period, an amendment to the Black Pearl campus lease accelerated initial capacity delivery by two months with rent commencing in early August 2026. The company also renamed from Cipher Mining to Cipher Digital in February 2026 to reflect the pivot.

Question 2

What is the difference between CIFR, IREN and NBIS?

Accepted Answer

They occupy different layers of the same AI infrastructure stack. Cipher Digital is a landlord: it secures cheap power and land, builds the shell and liquid cooling, and leases capacity to hyperscalers on long-term contracts while tenants supply their own GPUs. IREN is a vertically integrated operator: it develops its own sites and also buys NVIDIA accelerators directly, selling compute by the hour and absorbing hardware depreciation. Nebius Group is a cloud platform: it owns GPUs and runs a full software layer above them, with a large engineering organization and structured debt financing against deployed infrastructure.

Question 3

Does Cipher Digital take GPU obsolescence risk?

Accepted Answer

No. Cipher's tenants supply their own accelerators, so hardware obsolescence risk sits with the tenant rather than with Cipher. Cipher's exposure is counterparty credit risk on long-term leases and construction execution risk on delivering capacity to schedule. Its structural advantage is secured long-term power near 2.8 cents per kilowatt-hour, prefabricated structures that speed permitting and construction, and liquid cooling built into the shell from the start rather than retrofitted.

Question 4

How is Nebius financing its GPU purchases?

Accepted Answer

Nebius entered its first senior secured debt facility of approximately $775 million, backed by deployed GPU infrastructure and contracted cash flows from an investment-grade customer, maturing October 31, 2030 at SOFR plus 2.50%. It also benefits from substantial customer prepayments, with total deferred revenue near $6 billion and management expecting more than $9 billion of upfront funding across 2026. Financing accelerator purchases against the contracted revenue those accelerators generate is a structural advance for AI infrastructure, though the structure has not yet been tested through a downturn in compute pricing.

Question 5

Where can I read more CleaRank analysis?

Accepted Answer

CleaRank covers AI infrastructure, data centers, and sector-level investment themes across the market. For the landlord model and the bitcoin-to-HPC conversion, see the Cipher (CIFR) stock analysis on CleaRank. For the vertically integrated operator and its NVIDIA relationship, see the IREN Limited (IREN) stock page on CleaRank.
