Top indicators on the chart
The chart ships with the eight most-used indicators wired up by default. Trend, momentum, volatility and volume. Click any name on the left rail to add or remove it. The same indicator pack runs inside the simulator so the read you take on this page is exactly the read you trade.
Pair them, do not stack them. The cleanest reads come from one trend indicator plus one momentum or volatility indicator on the same chart. Adding a fourth or fifth signal almost always degrades the read instead of sharpening it. Pick a default pair and leave the periods at industry standard (MA-20, MA-50, MA-200, RSI-14, MACD 12-26-9, Bollinger 20,2, ATR-14).
| Indicator | What it measures | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| MA | Simple moving average of closes | Long-horizon trend |
| EMA | Exponential moving average weighted to recent bars | Faster trend, day trading |
| BOLL | Bollinger Bands. Mean plus 2 standard deviations | Volatility, mean reversion |
| MACD | 12-26-9 momentum oscillator | Trend changes, divergence |
| RSI | 14-period relative strength index | Overbought, oversold, divergence |
| KDJ | Stochastic momentum oscillator | Reversal timing on lower timeframes |
| VOL | Volume histogram | Confirming breakouts and reversals |
| ATR | 14-period average true range | Volatility-based stops and targets |
Default pair for swing traders: MA-200 plus RSI-14. Default pair for day traders: EMA-20 plus MACD 12-26-9. Default pair for breakout traders: BOLL 20,2 plus VOL.
Timeframe reference
Nine timeframes are available on the chart, from 1-minute candles through 1-month bars. The right timeframe is the one that matches your hold horizon. Trade the 1m and you exit in minutes. Trade the daily and you carry the position for days to weeks. Mismatching the chart timeframe and the hold horizon is the single most common reason newer traders cut winners early and let losers run.
Always check the higher timeframe first. Before placing a trade on a 5-minute setup, glance at the 1-hour and the daily. If the dominant trend on the higher timeframe is against the 5-minute setup, the trade is countertrend by definition. Use the higher timeframe to set the directional bias, then drop down to your execution timeframe for the entry trigger and the stop.
| Timeframe | Trader type | Setup horizon |
|---|---|---|
| 1m to 15m | Scalpers | Seconds to minutes |
| 30m to 1H | Day traders | Hours |
| 4H | Intraday swing traders | 1 to 3 days |
| 1D | Swing traders | Days to 2 weeks |
| 1W to 1M | Position traders | Weeks to months |
Multi-timeframe rule of thumb: anchor your bias on the timeframe one or two steps above your execution timeframe. A 5-minute trader takes bias from the 1H and the 4H. A daily trader takes bias from the weekly.
Five chart-reading mistakes that drain accounts
- Trading the 1-minute without context from the daily and 4-hour. Mark the dominant trend on the higher timeframes first, then drop down for entry timing.
- Stacking seven indicators until the chart is unreadable. Keep two on the chart: one for trend (MA or EMA), one for momentum or volatility (Bollinger, RSI or MACD).
- Drawing trendlines on closing prices, ignoring wicks. Anchor every trendline to the wick of the swing pivot. That is where the market actually transacted and rejected.
- Adjusting indicator periods until they confirm your bias. Pick the standard periods (MA-20, MA-50, MA-200, RSI-14, MACD 12-26-9, Bollinger 20,2) and leave them alone.
- Treating a moving-average crossover as a complete trade. A cross is a context flag. You still need an entry trigger, a defined stop, and a sized position before it counts as a trade.
